If there were the slow big trucks in front, the traffic had to follow them forming a long queue, waiting for a chance to overtake.

This roadside bus stop was really attracted my attention with a crashed car on top, and the message 'Jangan Ikuti Kami' or 'Don't follow us'.

This car drove too fast and fell down into the gorge.

I hoped that the road accidents in Indonesia were not in crisis as in Thailand. But I noticed one same thing, so many roadside signposts.

ได้แต่หวังว่า อุบัติเหตุบนถนนในอินโดนีเซียคงจะไม่วิกฤติเหมือนเมืองไทย แต่สิ่งที่ผมว่าเหมือนกัน คือ ป้ายข้างทางเยอะจริงๆ

From Kayu Tanam, the road started winding up the high mountain range. The traffic slowed down passing many shops, many cars parking on both sides. In front on the left, I saw a small waterfall flowing down from the cliff.

จากคายูตานัม ถนนเริ่มคดเคี้ยวไต่ระดับขึ้นแนวเทือกเขาสูง สักพักรถก็ต้องชะลอตัว เพราะผ่านเขตชุมชนที่มีร้านค้า มีรถจอดทั้งสองฝั่ง มองไปข้างหน้าเห็นน้ำตกสายเล็กๆ ไหลลงมาจากหน้าผาข้างทางซ้ายมือ

Minangkabau people usually called the waterfall (terjun) as the fountain (mancua), because terjun had a negative meaning of 'falling down' such as the car fell down the mountain.

This small but lovely waterfall was a popular rest stop at the scenic road-railway crossing.

ชาวมินังกาเบาชอบเรียก น้ำตก (terjun) ว่า น้ำพุ (mancua) เพราะ terjun มีความหมายว่า 'ตก' ไม่ค่อยเป็นมงคลเท่าไร เช่น รถตกเขา

น้ำตกสายเล็กกระทัดรัด เป็นจุดพักยอดนิยม ณ จุดตัดของถนนและทางรถไฟสายสวยนี้

We did not stop there because the flight was quite delayed and we should have many things to prepare for tomorrow's celebration that afternoon.

Water Park for All...

Just having in mind, it was right there ...in front on the right, the rapid roadside stream in the gorge turned into a large water park, the easily accessible park & fun joyfulness.

สวนน้ำมหาชน...

พอนึกถึง ก็มาเลย ...อยู่ตรงหน้าด้านขวามือ ลำธารสายเชี่ยวกรากในโตรกเขาข้างถนน ถูกปรับให้เป็นสวนน้ำขนาดใหญ่ ความสนุกสนานที่ใกล้แค่จอดรถแวะ

Water and fun had been paired since my childhood. Songkran festival, the waterfall, and the sea were always among the top lists. Even during the floods, we still had some fun. The countries in tropical monsoon regions like ours usually had the same water culture.

The Thai words 'sanook-sanarn' may imply how Thai people enjoy the water. Sanook means fun, although sanarn has a root meaning of the ritual bathing.

น้ำ กับ ความสนุก ถูกจับคู่กันตั้งแต่ผมยังเด็ก สงกรานต์ น้ำตก ทะเล คือ สิ่งที่คิดถึงเสมอ แม้แต่ตอนน้ำท่วม ก็ยังหาเรื่องสนุกได้ ประเทศเขตร้อนที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากลมมรสุมแถบนี้น่ามีวัฒนธรรมน้ำคล้ายๆ กัน 

คำว่า 'สนุกสนาน' ในภาษาไทย คงบอกเป็นนัยว่าคนไทยสนุกกับน้ำมาตลอด แม้คำว่า สนาน จะมีความหมายเดิมในเชิงพิธีกรรมแปลว่า การอาบน้ำ ก็ตาม

This restaurant was on the cliff by the road, just before going down to the plain. The place was quite airy with both the table and floor sitting area, a familiar culture.

From the restaurant, there was a good panoramic view with the Maninjau Lake mountain range as the background, the foreground below was paddy fields and coconut plantation. A familiar view, ..my mind went on again.

Of course, we ordered the fresh coconut juice from the shell, really good for thirsty. But for me, it was a meaningful welcome drink. Coconut, 'Karambia' in Bahaso Minang or 'Kelapa' in Bahasa Indonesia, is one of the cores in Minangkabau culture, the same as in Southern Thailand, my familiar culture.

เดาได้เลย ..เราสั่งน้ำมะพร้าวแบบทั้งลูกมากินกัน แก้กระหายได้ดีมาก แต่สำหรับผม มันเป็นเครื่องดื่มต้อนรับที่มีความหมายลึกซึ้ง เพราะ มะพร้าว ที่ชาวมินังเรียกว่า 'คารัมเบีย' ภาษาอินโดนีเซียเรียกว่า 'เคราปา' เป็นหนึ่งในแกนหลักของวัฒนธรรมชาวมินังกาเบา ซึ่งไม่ต่างจากวัฒนธรรมทางใต้ของไทย ..วัฒนธรรมที่ผมคุ้นเคย

I learned to count the numbers in Bahaso Minang, which was quite similar to what we did in Thailand deep south provinces, while playing with Abi who was making different frame shapes with the straws. Then I realized that..

Culture is like a frame that determines the shape of society. It's up to not only the people in that frame but also what's outside the frame and the frame itself.

We do not expect to see a coconut culture in Europe, and also the men in black suits with neck-tie to sit eating on the floor in the tropical countries.

ผมหัดนับตัวเลขภาษามินังที่คล้ายๆ กับภาษาถิ่นในจังหวัดชายแดนใต้ ระหว่างเล่นกับอะบิที่กำลังเอาหลอดดูดมาทำรูปทรงเหลี่ยมต่างๆ แล้วก็นึกขึ้นได้ว่า..

วัฒนธรรมก็เหมือนกรอบที่กำหนดรูปร่างของสังคม นอกจากจะขึ้นกับผู้คนที่อยู่ในกรอบนั้นแล้ว ก็ยังขึ้นกับสิ่งที่อยู่ด้านนอกกรอบ และตัวกรอบเอง 

เราคงไม่คาดหวังว่าจะเจอ วัฒนธรรมมะพร้าว ในยุโรป แล้วก็ไม่ควรจะเจอหนุ่มใส่สูทดำผูกผ้ารัดคอมานั่งกินกับพื้นในเมืองร้อน

Dutch's Railway-ทางรถไฟวิลันดา

The airport road met the main highway from Padang heading north of the island. From that junction, I saw the railway ran parallel to the road, sometimes crisscrossing.

Arif told me that it was built by the Dutch during the colonial period. Some had been out of service.

ถนนเข้าสนามบินมาบรรจบกับทางหลวงสายหลักจากปาดังที่มุ่งหน้าขึ้นไปทางเหนือของเกาะ จากจุดนั้น ผมสังเกตว่า ถนนมีทางรถไฟคู่ขนานและตัดผ่านหลายครั้ง 

อารีฟบอกว่า ทางรถไฟสายนี้สร้างโดยชาวดัตช์ในสมัยอาณานิคม บางส่วนเลิกใช้งานไปแล้ว

Indonesia is the first country in ASEAN to have a railway system, and the second in Asia, only after India. The first railway line operated in Java by the Dutch Governor in 1867. The Dutch were called 'Belando' in Bahaso Minang, 'Balanda' in Bahasa Indonesia or 'Wilanda' in Thai. 

The railway line in West Sumatra was used to transport coal, the important resource in that era, from Sawahlunto mines in the middle of the island to the coastal port at Padang.

อินโดนีเซียเป็นประเทศแรกในอาเซียนที่มีรถไฟใช้ และเป็นที่สองของเอเชียตามหลังอินเดียเพียงประเทศเดียวเท่านั้น โดยทางรถไฟสายแรกเริ่มใช้ที่เกาะชวาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2410 ตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 โดยเจ้าอาณานิคมในสมัยนั้น คือ ชาวดัตช์ ที่ชาวมินังเรียกว่า 'บาลันโด' ภาษาอินโดนีเซียเรียกว่า 'เบอลันดา' หรือ 'วิลันดา' ที่คนไทยใช้เรียกชาวเนเธอร์แลนด์ ฮอล์แลนด์ หรือ ฮอลันดา

This railway line was built between 1891-1894, before the first Thai railway which was operated in 1900 during the reign of King Rama V.

Currently, only two routes of the West Sumatra railways are still in service, one is the coastal route from Padang to Pariaman and another one is the mountain scenic route from Padang Panjang to Sawahlunto.

ทางรถไฟสายนี้สร้างขึ้นในช่วง พ.ศ. 2434-2437 ซึ่งก็ยังก่อนทางรถไฟสายแรกของไทยที่เพิ่งเริ่มใช้เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2443 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5

ปัจจุบัน ทางรถไฟในสุมาตราตะวันตกยังใช้ได้เพียงสองเส้นทาง คือ เส้นทางชายฝั่งจากปาดังไปปาริอามัน และเส้นทางสายท่องเที่ยวบนเทือกเขาจากปาดังปันจังไปสะวาลุนโต

This part of the railway line from Lubuak Aluang Junction on the plain to Padang Panjang Station on the mountain was out of service from the decaying bridges that built across many gorges and roads. Although non-functioning, these Dutch remnants did remind us what's happened in that period.

ทางรถไฟช่วงจากชุมทางลูบัวะอะลวงบนพื้นราบไปถึงปาดังปันจังบนเทือกเขา ที่ผมกำลังนั่งรถผ่านนี้ ได้เลิกใช้งานไปแล้ว เพราะสะพานที่สร้างทอดข้ามโตรกธารและถนนหลายแห่งชำรุด แต่ก็ยังคงเป็นอนุสรณ์ให้คนเดินทางได้รำลึกถึงช่วงเวลาที่อินโดนีเซียตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของวิลันดา

Along the way, I enjoyed looking for the railways, especially the bridges that sometimes were beautifully cross over the road. This was the same feeling when I was a child being in the car from Klong Ngae to Songkhla, enjoyed competing each other who was the first one to spot the railways or the bridges, on the left, right or crisscrossing. But this was quite different from nowadays while driving myself, waiting for the train to pass. 'Why did you make the roads and rails crisscrossing like this.. engineer!'

ผมเพลินกับการมองหาทางรถไฟ โดยเฉพาะสะพานรถไฟที่อยู่ข้างทาง หรือบางทีก็ทอดข้ามถนนอย่างงดงาม ด้วยความรู้สึกเดียวกับสมัยเด็กๆ เวลาได้นั่งรถจากคลองแงะไปสงขลา คือ สนุกกับการสังเกตว่า ทางรถไฟ สะพานอยู่ตรงไหน เดี๋ยวซ้าย เดี๋ยวขวา เดี๋ยวตัดผ่าน แล้วแข่งกันว่าใครเห็นก่อนกัน ซึ่งเป็นคนละอารมณ์กับเวลาต้องขับรถเองในปัจจุบัน ที่ออกจะหงุดหงิดเวลาต้องรถติดรอรถไฟผ่าน 'เออ..ทำไมต้องทำถนนกับทางรถไฟไขว้กันไปไขว้กันมาแบบนี้ด้วยล่ะครับ.. นายช่าง'
