Dutch's Railway-ทางรถไฟวิลันดา

The airport road met the main highway from Padang heading north of the island. From that junction, I saw the railway ran parallel to the road, sometimes crisscrossing.

Arif told me that it was built by the Dutch during the colonial period. Some had been out of service.

ถนนเข้าสนามบินมาบรรจบกับทางหลวงสายหลักจากปาดังที่มุ่งหน้าขึ้นไปทางเหนือของเกาะ จากจุดนั้น ผมสังเกตว่า ถนนมีทางรถไฟคู่ขนานและตัดผ่านหลายครั้ง 

อารีฟบอกว่า ทางรถไฟสายนี้สร้างโดยชาวดัตช์ในสมัยอาณานิคม บางส่วนเลิกใช้งานไปแล้ว

Indonesia is the first country in ASEAN to have a railway system, and the second in Asia, only after India. The first railway line operated in Java by the Dutch Governor in 1867. The Dutch were called 'Belando' in Bahaso Minang, 'Balanda' in Bahasa Indonesia or 'Wilanda' in Thai. 

The railway line in West Sumatra was used to transport coal, the important resource in that era, from Sawahlunto mines in the middle of the island to the coastal port at Padang.

อินโดนีเซียเป็นประเทศแรกในอาเซียนที่มีรถไฟใช้ และเป็นที่สองของเอเชียตามหลังอินเดียเพียงประเทศเดียวเท่านั้น โดยทางรถไฟสายแรกเริ่มใช้ที่เกาะชวาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2410 ตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 โดยเจ้าอาณานิคมในสมัยนั้น คือ ชาวดัตช์ ที่ชาวมินังเรียกว่า 'บาลันโด' ภาษาอินโดนีเซียเรียกว่า 'เบอลันดา' หรือ 'วิลันดา' ที่คนไทยใช้เรียกชาวเนเธอร์แลนด์ ฮอล์แลนด์ หรือ ฮอลันดา 

ทางรถไฟในสุมาตราตะวันตกเคยเป็นเส้นทางลำเลียงถ่านหิน ทรัพยากรสำคัญในยุคล่าอาณานิคม จากเหมืองในสะวาลุนโตตอนกลางของเกาะ มายังท่าเรือชายฝั่งที่ปาดัง

This railway line was built between 1891-1894, before the first Thai railway which was operated in 1900 during the reign of King Rama V.

Currently, only two routes of the West Sumatra railways are still in service, one is the coastal route from Padang to Pariaman and another one is the mountain scenic route from Padang Panjang to Sawahlunto.

ทางรถไฟสายนี้สร้างขึ้นในช่วง พ.ศ. 2434-2437 ซึ่งก็ยังก่อนทางรถไฟสายแรกของไทยที่เพิ่งเริ่มใช้เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2443 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5

ปัจจุบัน ทางรถไฟในสุมาตราตะวันตกยังใช้ได้เพียงสองเส้นทาง คือ เส้นทางชายฝั่งจากปาดังไปปาริอามัน และเส้นทางสายท่องเที่ยวบนเทือกเขาจากปาดังปันจังไปสะวาลุนโต

This part of the railway line from Lubuak Aluang Junction on the plain to Padang Panjang Station on the mountain was out of service from the decaying bridges that built across many gorges and roads. Although non-functioning, these Dutch remnants did remind us what's happened in that period.

ทางรถไฟช่วงจากชุมทางลูบัวะอะลวงบนพื้นราบไปถึงปาดังปันจังบนเทือกเขา ที่ผมกำลังนั่งรถผ่านนี้ ได้เลิกใช้งานไปแล้ว เพราะสะพานที่สร้างทอดข้ามโตรกธารและถนนหลายแห่งชำรุด แต่ก็ยังคงเป็นอนุสรณ์ให้คนเดินทางได้รำลึกถึงช่วงเวลาที่อินโดนีเซียตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของวิลันดา

Along the way, I enjoyed looking for the railways, especially the bridges that sometimes were beautifully cross over the road. This was the same feeling when I was a child being in the car from Klong Ngae to Songkhla, enjoyed competing each other who was the first one to spot the railways or the bridges, on the left, right or crisscrossing. But this was quite different from nowadays while driving myself, waiting for the train to pass. 'Why did you make the roads and rails crisscrossing like this.. engineer!'

ผมเพลินกับการมองหาทางรถไฟ โดยเฉพาะสะพานรถไฟที่อยู่ข้างทาง หรือบางทีก็ทอดข้ามถนนอย่างงดงาม ด้วยความรู้สึกเดียวกับสมัยเด็กๆ เวลาได้นั่งรถจากคลองแงะไปสงขลา คือ สนุกกับการสังเกตว่า ทางรถไฟ สะพานอยู่ตรงไหน เดี๋ยวซ้าย เดี๋ยวขวา เดี๋ยวตัดผ่าน แล้วแข่งกันว่าใครเห็นก่อนกัน ซึ่งเป็นคนละอารมณ์กับเวลาต้องขับรถเองในปัจจุบัน ที่ออกจะหงุดหงิดเวลาต้องรถติดรอรถไฟผ่าน 'เออ..ทำไมต้องทำถนนกับทางรถไฟไขว้กันไปไขว้กันมาแบบนี้ด้วยล่ะครับ.. นายช่าง'

Formerly I only knew that Minangkabau was one of the ethnic people in Indonesia like Javanese and Acehnese, with the high-spired roof houses. 

My interest in Minangkabau volcanically erupted when I just recognized that Arif, my medical physicist colleague, was one of them and about to go home for his wedding.

I did not hesitate to follow him back home. This was my opportunity to learn about the unique people with a well-established culture, the source of this 'Minangkabau Memoir'.

ผมเคยรู้แค่ว่า ชาวมินังกาเบาเป็นชนเผ่าหนึ่งในอินโดนีเซีย เหมือนกับชาวชวา ชาวอาเจะห์ และมีจุดเด่นที่สร้างบ้านหน้าจั่วสูงแหลม ชนิดที่จั่วบ้านไทยต้องหลบซ้ายให้ 

ความสนใจเรื่องราวของชาวมินังกาเบามาปะทุขึ้นราวภูเขาไฟ เมื่อผมเพิ่งรู้ว่า อารีฟ..นักพิสิกส์ที่ทำงานอยู่ด้วยกัน เป็นชาวมินังกาเบา แล้วกำลังจะกลับบ้านไปแต่งงาน

ผมไม่รีรอที่จะตามไปด้วย เมื่อเขามาชวนไปงาน เพราะนี่เป็นโอกาสทองที่ผมจะได้รู้จักชนเผ่าหนึ่งที่มีวิถีชีวิต วัฒนธรรมที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์สืบทอดกันมาอย่างยาวนาน ได้เรียนรู้มุมมองของชาวมินังกาเบาผ่านการได้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของครอบครัวเขา ซึ่งเป็นที่มาของบันทึกชุดนี้.. 'มิติ มินัง'

I flew from Hat Yai to stay overnight in Kuala Lumpur then to Padang, the capital of West Sumatra. During the landing, the plane passed above one of the volcano craters. 'Wow, approaching the land of volcanoes', I realized.

North of the airport, the direction I was heading to, I saw a remarkable cone-shaped mountain ..Gunung or Mount Singgalang. (the picture above)

ผมบินจากหาดใหญ่ไปค้างกัวลาลัมเปอร์หนึ่งคืน ก่อนจะบินต่อไปปาดัง เมืองหลวงของสุมาตราตะวันตก ตอนกำลังลดระดับลงสู่สนามบิน เครื่องบินผ่านปากปล่องภูเขาไฟพอดี 'สุดยอดอะ กำลังจะถึงดินแดนแห่งภูเขาไฟแล้ว' ..ผมนึกในใจ 

จากสนามบิน เมื่อมองไปทางทิศเหนือที่กำลังมุ่งหน้าไป ผมเห็นภูเขาสัณฐานรูปกรวยลูกหนึ่งตั้งเด่นเป็นสง่า ..ภูเขาไฟซิงกะลัง (ภาพข้างบน)

There were only 2 lines for the foreigner immigration, so the queues were quite long. Most travelers were the groups of Malaysian, I might be the only Thai.

I printed only the boarding pass for the return flight but not the e-ticket, so the male officer did not stamp my passport. Arif, after his quicker Indonesian immigration, had to come and help me talk with him in a local language. During their conversation, I searched the ticket file stored in my phone and let him see it, my passport then was finally stamped.

Actually, what I showed him was not the return ticket from Padang to Kuala Lumpur.

The problem was not over yet. The customs officers asked me to see 'the books' in my only backpack after being x-rayed. Actually, they were 2 packs of 'riceberry rice' I traditionally brought for the bride and groom families. A group of officers there asked Arif and me and explained politely about the regulation to bring these milled rice into the country. I just told myself, 'I can leave them here anyway'. 

But they finally let me take the rice as the wedding gifts. I felt very grateful for their politeness, professionalism, and generosity.

แถวตรวจคนเข้าเมืองสำหรับชาวต่างชาติมีเพียง 2 ช่องจึงค่อนข้างยาว นักท่องเที่ยวส่วนใหญ่เป็นกลุ่มชาวมาเลเซีย ผมน่าจะเป็นคนไทยเพียงคนเดียว 

แล้วก็เกิดปัญหาจนได้ ผมพิมพ์แต่บัตรขึ้นเครื่องเที่ยวบินขากลับมา ไม่ได้พิมพ์ตั๋วอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ เจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ชายจึงไม่ยอมท่าเดียว จนอารีฟที่ผ่านการตรวจคนเข้าเมืองฝั่งชาวอินโดนีเซียซึ่งสั้นกว่าไปแล้ว ต้องเข้ามาช่วยเจรจาด้วยภาษาท้องถิ่น ระหว่างนั้น ผมก็ค้นไฟล์ตั๋วที่เก็บไว้ในมือถือแสดงให้เขาดู เขาหยิบไปดู แล้วก็ปั๊มหนังสือเดินทางให้แบบไม่สบอารมณ์ 

ความจริงไฟล์ตั๋วที่ผมแสดง ไม่ใช่เที่ยวบินขากลับจากปาดังไปกัวลาลัมเปอร์

ปัญหายังไม่จบแค่นั้น เป้สะพายหลังใบเดียวของผมหลังจากถูกเอกซเรย์ก็ถูกเจ้าหน้าที่ขอดู 'หนังสือ' ที่อยู่ข้างใน ความจริงมันคือ 'ข้าวไรส์เบอรี่' 2 ห่อที่ผมเตรียมมาให้ครอบครัวของเจ้าบ่าวเจ้าสาวตามธรรมเนียม เจ้าหน้าที่ตรงนั้นพยายามสอบถามและอธิบายให้ผมกับอารีฟฟังอย่างสุภาพถึงข้อบังคับในการนำข้าวสารพวกนี้เข้าประเทศ ผมก็ตัดใจแล้วว่า 'ถ้าเอาไปไม่ได้ ผมก็ยอมทิ้งตรงนั้น' 

แต่สุดท้ายเขาก็ยอมให้ผมเอาข้าวของขวัญผ่านไปได้ ต้องขอบคุณพวกเขามากทั้งเรื่องความสุภาพ เป็นมืออาชีพ และมีน้ำใจ

Almost an hour after the plane landing, I came out of the arrival hall. Endi..Arif 's father was waiting for us with Abi..his youngest brother and Pangeran..our driver.

เกือบ 1 ชม. หลังจากเครื่องบินลงจอด ผมก็ได้ออกมาด้านนอกอาคารผู้โดยสารขาเข้า โดยมี เอนดิ..คุณพ่อของอารีฟมารอรับอยู่ด้วยตนเอง พร้อมกับอะบิ..น้องชายคนเล็ก และปะแงรัน..คนขับรถ

I forgot all the excitements in the airport after being warmly Seramat Datang from Arif's family and was ready for a trip to the land of Minangkabau.

ผมลืมเรื่องตื่นเต้นภายในสนามบินไปเลย เมื่อพบ การต้อนรับ อย่างอบอุ่นของครอบครัวอารีฟ และพร้อมสำหรับการเดินทางสู่ดินแดนของชาวมิงนังกาเบาแล้ว
