This restaurant was on the cliff by the road, just before going down to the plain. The place was quite airy with both the table and floor sitting area, a familiar culture.

From the restaurant, there was a good panoramic view with the Maninjau Lake mountain range as the background, the foreground below was paddy fields and coconut plantation. A familiar view, ..my mind went on again.

Of course, we ordered the fresh coconut juice from the shell, really good for thirsty. But for me, it was a meaningful welcome drink. Coconut, 'Karambia' in Bahaso Minang or 'Kelapa' in Bahasa Indonesia, is one of the cores in Minangkabau culture, the same as in Southern Thailand, my familiar culture.

เดาได้เลย ..เราสั่งน้ำมะพร้าวแบบทั้งลูกมากินกัน แก้กระหายได้ดีมาก แต่สำหรับผม มันเป็นเครื่องดื่มต้อนรับที่มีความหมายลึกซึ้ง เพราะ มะพร้าว ที่ชาวมินังเรียกว่า 'คารัมเบีย' ภาษาอินโดนีเซียเรียกว่า 'เคราปา' เป็นหนึ่งในแกนหลักของวัฒนธรรมชาวมินังกาเบา ซึ่งไม่ต่างจากวัฒนธรรมทางใต้ของไทย ..วัฒนธรรมที่ผมคุ้นเคย

I learned to count the numbers in Bahaso Minang, which was quite similar to what we did in Thailand deep south provinces, while playing with Abi who was making different frame shapes with the straws. Then I realized that..

Culture is like a frame that determines the shape of society. It's up to not only the people in that frame but also what's outside the frame and the frame itself.

We do not expect to see a coconut culture in Europe, and also the men in black suits with neck-tie to sit eating on the floor in the tropical countries.

ผมหัดนับตัวเลขภาษามินังที่คล้ายๆ กับภาษาถิ่นในจังหวัดชายแดนใต้ ระหว่างเล่นกับอะบิที่กำลังเอาหลอดดูดมาทำรูปทรงเหลี่ยมต่างๆ แล้วก็นึกขึ้นได้ว่า..

วัฒนธรรมก็เหมือนกรอบที่กำหนดรูปร่างของสังคม นอกจากจะขึ้นกับผู้คนที่อยู่ในกรอบนั้นแล้ว ก็ยังขึ้นกับสิ่งที่อยู่ด้านนอกกรอบ และตัวกรอบเอง 

เราคงไม่คาดหวังว่าจะเจอ วัฒนธรรมมะพร้าว ในยุโรป แล้วก็ไม่ควรจะเจอหนุ่มใส่สูทดำผูกผ้ารัดคอมานั่งกินกับพื้นในเมืองร้อน
